By itself, stress does not cause pain. However, stress does cause some behaviors that cause us pain, such as tightening the muscles in our shoulders and neck, clenching our teeth, and not sleeping well. These are areas where health psychologists can help you manage pain.

Health and illness are influenced by a wide variety of factors. While contagious and hereditary illness are common, there are many behavioral and psychological factors that can impact overall physical well-being and various medical conditions. Health psychology is a specialty area that focuses on how biology, psychology, behavior, and social factors influence health and illness. Health psychology is also sometimes known as medical psychology or behavioral medicine.

Health psychology promotes health as well as the prevention and treatment of disease and illness. Health psychologists also seek to understand how people react, cope, and recover from illness.

Jonathan Cole, PhD and Amanda Merchant, PhD are the two health psychologists we refer to.

Some areas that they deal with are:

  • pain and headaches
  • bio feedback
  • sleep disorders
  • obesity
  • panic disorder
  • assess for for substance abuse

The goal is to teach you how to overcome different psychological traits that promote pain. It is common for you to complete this program in 4 to 5 visits.
